About
Gicken Johansson is a musician, composer, and producer from Halmstad, Sweden. Through performing live and on recordings since the late 1980s, he has built a long-standing reputation in his local music scene as a versatile musical presence. Primarily known as a bassist but equally home across multiple instruments, he plays across a variety of genres such as jazz, blues, pop, rock, reggae, and progressive. Johansson makes sure to always allow curiosity rather than category to guide his work and his openness has shaped a career that is based on collaboration and exchange.
As a co-founder and member in a number of bands through the years, Johansson has been writing, arranging and co-producing albums like Neighbours -- Live at Gostas (2003), Sounds of Eternity -- Part One (2006), Paintbox -- Bright Gold and Red (2008), The Night (2011) and Jukeclock 500 -- A Thousand More (2019). Johansson also co-produced Linnea Olsson -- Ah! (2012) and Breaking and Shaking (2014) and is featured as a musician on recordings with artists like Emil Brandqvist, Per Gessle, Per Thornberg, Lars-Åke Snus Svensson and Mariette, to name a few.
At the peak of the pandemic, when playing live was not an option, Johansson decided to compose, arrange and record music for a solo album. He set out on a project to write instrumental music, specifically for the musicians he had in mind for the recordings. To his delight, long-time collaborator and close friend Magnus Helgesson agreed to accept the invitation to co-produce and co-mix the album, continuing a partnership that began in 1995.
With a broad familiarity in different genres, and a vision of merging traditional instruments with modern elements, Johansson explored his own musical universe. Percussive beats, intricate melodies, ambient sounds and moods, odd time signatures and a lot of joy and playfulness permeated the creative process and led to the carving out of the ten compositions that feature on his debut album – These Things Happen.
